Escape from Cuba: Yasiel Puig’s Untold Journey to the Dodgers (English/español)

“I don’t know if you could call it a kidnapping, because we had gone there voluntarily, but we also weren’t free to leave,” said boxer, Yunior Despaigne, who had known Yasiel Puig from Cuba’s youth sports academies. “If they didn’t receive the money, they were saying that at any moment they might give him amachetazo”—a whack with a machete—“chop off an arm, a finger, whatever, and he would never play baseball again, not for anyone.”

“No sé si se puede llamar secuestro, porque habíamos ido voluntariamente, pero tampoco éramos libres de irnos”, dijo el boxeador, Yunior Despaigne, que conocía a Puig de las academias de deportes para jóvenes de Cuba. “Si no recibían el dinero, estaban diciendo que en cualquier momento le darían un machetazo le cortarían un brazo, un dedo, lo que fuera, y ya no volvería a jugar al béisbol para nadie”.
