The icing on the cake? When I proposed to Leslie in 2007, I bought her a $6,500 diamond engagement ring — with money from a student loan.

More than a year passed before I started to worry about our debt. And that’s exactly what I thought it was: our debt. I didn’t think it made a difference that all of it — the condo, $25,000 of credit card debt, $70,000 in student loans — was in my name.

If he had used that money to support himself during the early years of his career he would be making bank as a Production Designer instead of living at home and having to teach for income.

Dumbass graduates from college without the chops to pass Finance 101. No wonder today’s college grads can’t get jobs. Perfect example of why their degrees aren’t worth anything

The last line is key, never assume someone else’s debt. He was used by his partner during courtship and marriage and she continued on to Wall Street where she will further fleece investors and be rewarded.

Regarding college, many Lykis listeners like to dump of the value of a college degree. College is a tool if used properly prepares one for a lifetime of work, learning, contacts, friends and most importantly, the ability to think critically. Depending upon a college degree plan to map out everything one needs to learn is not taking full advantage of a learning institution. Theater majors learn to produce theater to the best that their talent permits. If the student fails to take the courses needed to think critically about finance that is the the fault of the student not the institution.
