All enterprises lose money for the first few years when offering a new product. Your trend is good, do you have the growth capacity in the audience to double, triple or better the size of the audience. Does your net loss include your salary? Doing my part by referring friends!

Even though you’re still currently in the red, I think the numbers are showing an obvious and drastic trend towards the black. It would be more helpful to see a monthly or even quarterly breakdown to determine whether there were just a few flukes or if the slope has been fairly continuously upward all year, gaining momentum with time.

I’ve been hoping for a while that you’d make 1 or 2 varieties of advertising stickers that listeners could purchase from your website or even from Amazon (using your Amazon link of course for the double payoff). Of course you would never encourage this behavior, but I’m sure some unsavory listeners would purchase heaps of these stickers and slap them all over their respective towns. If even 1% of the stickers prompted a single person to start listening to the show you could see a huge return. Also, since listeners would purchase the stickers for cost or maybe just over cost, this wouldn’t even necessarily have to be listed under the advertising budget. It would either come out as a wash or possibly become a revenue stream.

I think we all need to work harder to get Tom’s message into the faces of those that are least likely to agree with it, namely feminist groups. Once they become aware of the force that has already started building they will take the reigns in spreading the word if only to try to counter it. This would likely be the fastest way to increase the listenership and bring in a ton of opposition calls, which is what we all loved from the old show.

Tom I’ve been a listener since Phoenix. I scanned the dial to find ABC (anything but country) and found you. Followed you ever since.

You have a brand new business. I don’t think you can evaluate if it is viable for five years. I understand the red ink is a problem, but if you can successfully monetize the format, 175K will be chum change. Disney did not make an overall profit from it’s 1923 founding to 1939. Directv did ten in the red from start up. SiriusXM is waiting to ring the register in the black.

All the red ink at Clear Channel simply means there will be a new owner. Radio will not cease because they borrowed too much. The demo over there skews gray because they have not had a fresh Idea since the Jack Benny program.

You face a real problem at the moment in that it is not easy to hear your show in the car. It starts and stops, drops out, even when driving down Victory in Burbank. That is about to change. Automakers are moving fast to couple the car to the internet. Touch screens will have a Leykis button.

You need some national advertisers. Ones that will buy a full schedule. Alcohol, cars, salty snacks, men’s fashion come to mind.

You have been more successful with your talk program than any other on the internet. I see Howard Stern money in your future if you and the boys stay the course for a few more years.

    Tom,

I understand you are spending more money on the business than you are bringing in at the current moment. This is not where you want to be.

But consider where you were a year ago. You asked us to tell one other person how to tune in and it appears we did that. It appears the new listeners are spending money and increasing your revenue. Because there are so many freeloaders I wouldn’t count on increasing your revenue per listener very much (all though it is possible by increasing your number of revenue streams). However, do you have the same amount of listeners that you had when you were on terrestrial radio? The people that loved you then haven’t stopped loving you and the people that hated you then haven’t stopped that either. They probably just don’t know you’re back. If you had as many listeners as you did on terrestrial radio and they all spent the $3 dollars each current listeners are spending now, would that result in a profit? If so, you need to get the word out there. You need to put up billboards in LA saying “Your Dad is back!” for the fans and “I’m back, Bitches!” for the haters! Another idea to get more listeners (and more revenue) would be to post weekly videos on Youtube. According to several things I’ve seen online you can make good dough doing that if you are a Youtube partner. You could either post a classic call weekly or maybe the Friday montage. People can already get content for free, so why not at least get free advertising out of it when people share links? Whether it’s a guy sending a 101 segment to his buddy or a feminist sending an “offensive” segment to her friends, you get advertising. And if you are a Youtube partner you get revenue!

Your job is to sell advertising. Are companies spending less on advertising, or have they just shifted where they spend advertising dollars? Do you need to shift your ideas on where to sell advertising (try to make more off youtube vs. on air ads)?

Lastly, if you look at this as a business, it is not fulfilling your needs. But there is another way to look at this. You can look at it as a hobby. Yes, it is an expensive hobby, but it has the potential to start making you money if you keep it up and perfect your craft. You have perfected the on-air portion, now you need to spend time perfecting the business side. It might have been a bit arrogant to think you could be making profit so soon…you should be humbled, but you should not quit!

You love doing the show. Just like how you like to drink wine. How much money have you made off drinking wine? How much money have you made watching the lakers? Other affluent people have expensive hobbies. How much does Charlie Sheen make off his partying? How much did Kobe make off rapping? How much does Bieber make off acting a fool? How much does Kim Kardashian make off shopping? The bottom line is, if you love the show, the only question should be, can you afford it. I’m guessing you can. And it will only become more affordable and rewarding the more you stick with it! You have always said to believe in yourself and to invest in yourself. Think about the amount of time and effort that elapsed between when you were a kid dreaming of being on the radio till you fulfilled your dream. This is just your next dream. Keep calm and carry on!

For those who are on the fence about committing to the full premium membership for various reasons (astroid might hit earth tomorrow, etc.), I am wondering if there is a way to download ala cart versions of the 101 on itunes, or direct e-download mp3?

If I were Tom’s producer (and obviously I can only produce BS at this point), I would FEATURE a particular episode, best cuts, bloopers, or other insider content that no one could get except those who downloaded a particular BONUS track.

If I buy Tom a virtual beer, I can get nothing, but if I buy a particularly popular mp3 that I can play for my buddies to convince them to DTB, or wear a condom, etc. etc. I’d pay the $1.99 for the ala cart menu, and it could change daily – best of, crazy bitches, 101, whatever..

Seems to me that blowmeuptom.com has gone viral, and webmasters would die to have 9 million annual hits, so I’m just saying there has to be a way to convert those hits into a buck or two from even 10% of the audience. Charge .99 cents for a custom app, like the other dude calling today suggested. I predict that revenue will go up with ala cart special production downloads.

    Hey Tom,

Been a listener since 97.1, and graduated college with 2 educations thanks to you. When I met you I was already somewhat a disciple even though I had never heard of you. Once I got turned on to you, it was like WTF, this dude is just like me (family history and all)!!.. You being more refined in the art of Leykis 101 (as I now defer to it being called) I followed religiously. My own mother listens to you and loves the shit outta you. She screams your lessons every chance she gets, its a trip. Now, I JUST found you again.

I was delighted to know you were back on the air in some capacity. At first I was a little bummed because it appeared the only way I was able to listen to you was by having to pay. Now hold on … give me a minute let me explain. YES, even your most hardcores will see that to start and kinda be like “awww man”, but remember this is something we have been used to getting for free forever! THEN I found the unofficial app, and started to listen regularly again and thought “oh how awesome I guess I can still listen without having to pay.” AGAIN, hear me out! ….

Ok, so here I go again listening to The Professor extremely content .. Yes I hear the ads of the app and all that but with the quality of the stream, and hearing how regardless of what type of listener you are it still drops out, and makes it extremely hard and frustrating to listen to. I listen to you and the JRE and yours is the only one that does that and it is frustrating! THEN I heard about the losses, and whats going on at the moment.

I have to say, and I KNOW I can speak for the above average Tom Leykis supporter, if we CAN we will. Some of the most sad and boring years were the ones when 97.1 went off the air. I would listen to that station ALL DAY; when I was on the road, downtime … whatever .. and when Howard left YOU were the main dude, and I realized I appreciated you MORE than Stern since you were like ME and ANGELENO!

Point is, I am going to now be a paid subscriber, and even though I have always appreciated the listen first and if you like it you pay for it … this is the first time I see it applied the right way. Listen bud, I appreciate you. I think you are the best personality there has ever been on radio and this is coming from somebody who loved stern in his prime! I wish you continued success, and hope to be a listener for many many years to come. Nobody can control the mic like you (until I start my own podcast one day… nah Im just fuckin wit cha) ..

take it easy Tom, and I wish you much success.
Here is to you … *Cheers*

    Tom,

If I was you I would:
-figure out ways for P1s to recommend, post URLs, blog about your show on a wider variety of networks. Get your word out to Florida, England, Australia
-Liven up Leykis 101 by bringing in some of these so-called experts from the pick-up community. You can have some arguments.
    -Bring in more guests
Just my thoughts. Keep up the good work.

I think the focus should be on the facts and what’s possible. Revenue is trending upward at over 200k/yr: fact. 9.7 million tune ins: fact. 175k now annual deficit: fact.

What’s possible: closing the deficit with new revenue streams and incentives to sign up, donate, participate and fornicate. it just occured to me that a monthly raffle for a trip to a Legal Nevada brothel at $1 per entry might easily generate 10k/mo in additional revenue if promoted properly. P1s are automatically entered (increases subscriptions), buy Tom a beer and get an automatic entry that month, or just buy one single $1 entry for a chance to win. *The ‘winner’ assumes all liability and must be an adult.

A simple link to a paypal button, and a way to randomly mix up the last digits of the confirmation code or numeric order on the reciept. Have a link directly on the website, or through a custom app to drop a dollar, subscribe, buy a beer, donate a bitcoin, etc.

Think of all the feminists this would offend! Think of how many bad marriages on the edge would be shattered! Think how an extra 10 grand a month in revenue would benifit the NNN.

Tom, this is probably a dumb question, but have you considered selling the right to broadcast your shows (syndication?) to radio stations? The other thought I had was if we launched a facebook campaign and petition for Sirius to carry your show. It would also have the added effect of publicizing the new normal. Quite frankly it’s amazing what you have accomplished from the grassroots by word of mouth.

as long as things keep getting better, i’d say run with it as long as you can comfortably afford to subsidize it. it could reach the point where it breaks even, maybe even this coming year. my only (lamen’s) advice would be to build a stronger presence on youtube. even though the place is full of idiots, there are many potential new listeners if you can stand out.

  12. Kapitan January 8, 2014 at 1:34 am #

to add to my previous comment: you can potentially generate revenue by monetizing your videos. it won’t be much money but it will help.

So what, exactly, was Tom’s decision. He promised a decision on Monday 1/6/14 and I have yet to see anything relating to it on this web site. WTF?

  14. Decision January 12, 2014 at 8:12 am #

    yea, what was the decision?

    • Tom Leykis January 12, 2014 at 11:32 am #

Had you been listening, you would know the answer!
